The lads travelled to St Andrews for the season opener with a very different look to the team having changed personnel and also playing with a new shape.
The game started relatively evenly with both teams looking to apply early pressure, St Andrews were using their target men quite well whilst the Town boys were trying to get the ball down and use good passing and movement. The break through came for St Andrews when the striker got an opportunity in space and fund the corner with his effort. The set back seemed to spur a bit more fight in the Town lads and they went up a gear, running powerfully with and without the ball and getting a foothold in the game, opportunities were created but never a real clear chance.
As the half drew on St Andrews created an overload on their left hand side, with the Town players ball watching, again the striker found enough space to finish.
The second half was more of the same really, but Town had organised themselves and were dealing well with the high long balls from St Andrews, with the ball on the floor we were looking dangerous on the attack with some fast movement and passing, a couple of opportunities came and went but unfortunately we were not able to get the goal that our performance deserved. With 5 minutes left the decision was made to try and get something from the game, we put an extra player upfront and dropped to 3 at the back, although this did give us a little extra threat going forwards we found ourselves a little vulnerable on the break. The inevitable happened with the boys pressing, St Andrews broke twice to score and give them a very flattering 4-0 victory.
Some really positive things to take from the game today, the work rate and fight was there to the end and I felt that we dominated possession for long periods of the match. Not the result we wanted or indeed deserved.
